Notes on D1: MTSD1Tapes.pdf is a scan of notes John Hogg from UBC made while we were creating the first distribution of MTS. The number in parens in John's notes are the component number. The driver file didn't exist yet, but John (or someone) assigned the component numbers. The tape images here are actually the Newcastle version of Distribution 1. Based on the experience of UBC and the different requirements of Newcastle we augmented the UBC version of D1 for Newcastle by adding some extra files to tape 2. D1T1 contained tapes MS01 through MS03 from John's notes and is in files 1 through 259 of the combined tape in d1.0.t1t2.aws. D1T2 contained MS04 from John's notes, which is in files 260 through 330 of d1.0.t1t2.aws, and the extra files for Newcastle. These tapes were written sometime after (probably soon after) Oct. 23, 1968. The notes below augment or correct John's notes on Distribution 1 MS01 files 30 and 31 (the QN and PN jobs) are reversed from John's notes. MS04 file 20 is really the last UMIST file not the first SNOBOL file. There is an extra file between files 68 and 69 of MS04 which seems to be another Fortran library file. MS04 contained 71 files total, not 70. The extra Newcastle files seem to be (using the file numbers from d1.0.t1t2.aws): 331-342: PL/I compiler 343-365: PL/I library 366: Lablesniff program written in PL/I 367: Small UMMPS update 368: Newcastle tables 369: Macro library, perhaps for GPSS 370: GTIMEST described as "GET TIME ESTIMATE FOR GPSS - VERSION 2" 371: Macro library with ID BMAC that defines SVE (subr entry), RTRN (subr return), and PARA (I/O parameters) macros 372-373: Two versions of the 2780 DSR that differ mostly in how they handle carriage control. 374: Update to GSFS (file 61) that adds support for machines that don't have the search list instruction RPQ. 375: Newcastle version of VOLREL, etc. In those days the table of MTS volumes was built into it. 376: Object for a program to restore files from tape 377-398: Accounting programs from October 1968 399-438: ASMG update and source 439-457: WATFOR update and source 458-459: LISP update and source 460-462: PL360 update and source 463-469: SDS update and source 470: PDP8 assembler 471-472: Two versions of RAMP. File 471 is version 55 and 472 is 54.
